Malmöfestivalen och mer... [22 Aug 2006|10:43am]

[ music | Stromkern - 'Stand Up' - Light It Up [2005] ]

Finally some time to post again! For various reasons I've not been in the mood for posting anything despite it having been a hectic summer. However, now I'm feeling like getting back to some regular updates and maybe some backdated posts...

This weekend Abby & Paul came to visit for the annual return of the free Malmöfestival, a chance to catch up with pretty much everyone in Malmö & enjoy good food, beer and free gigs :) Fortunately the weather held out for the main attraction on Saturday - Stromkern & Front Line Assembly !
Despite the poor sound and lack of familiarity the Swedes have with Stromkern they played a blinder and will definately rock InFest this coming weekend! [If any of you have failed to get your tickets for InFest then do it NOW!]
FLA also gave a great show with a well balanced & dynamic set of classic oldies and new tunes - Plasticity & Mindphaser were well appreciated :)
SPOCK were also on top form with fantastic lighting & never a serious moment on stage ;p

Great to see Paul & Abby again for some quality time, fully fueled on Moose kebab & Wild Boar sausages they trundled back home yesterday morning.

...and despite the late hour of my arrival to a very warm welcome :)

After a looong week & the stress & hassle of getting through Stansted with the increased security and then ONLY just making to the plane, to then have to sit there for more than an hour waiting for other passengers caught in security, I was delighted to have Lizette waiting for me when I got back home :D Better still, she'll be staying all week and will be around for Malmöfestivalen to meet Abby & Paul again.

The week in the UK was hectic... After arrival on Monday night I spent Tuesday with my folks before running into town to catch Bauhaus. Matt got delayed in some traffic issues on the way home from work so I missed catching up with him and after all that, the gig was merely average. A far cry from the amazing show 6 years ago on their reformation tour, I'm not sure I'll make the effort again.

Wednesday morning I took an early (!? delayed by 1h due to a power surge) train down to Weymouth for a couple of days catchup with Simon at the Cat-hair Hotel ;p
I was also persuaded to part with some hard-earned for a new NDS Lite, an upgrade from my old Gameboy Advance. Nice little piece of kit, though I now need to hit eBay to get hold of a micro SD card reader and a pack of ROMs for some free gaming ;)

Thursday I was back on public transport again for the return to London and a catchup with Martin before he jetted of to M'Era Luna. All I can say is 'thank fcuk for iPod & NDS'!!! I *HATE* public transport, especially when small children and chavs are involved!!!! >:[
Good to see Martin, Sarah & Seth for a brief chat & a smoke, then back on the train again to get myself back to my parents in Hatfield. Nightime this took about 2.5h from Stokie via KingsX with a good deal of loitering waiting for the next bus/train.

Friday was an essential relaxation day before the wedding-of-the-year on Sat. Again I was on the train across London to get to Guildford, Surrey to see Uwe and Sarah getting hitched.
Great to see everyone again and catch up. Despite the brides 50 minute late arrival (!!) the service went without a hitch and the following meal, speeches & partying was wonderful, only slightly marred by some local lunatic getting drunk & making a fool of himself.

Pete, myself & a few bods left a little early at 10.30pm to get back up to Slimelight (by train again! :( ) for some extended partying. Finally arriving about 1.30am just having missed Cervello - sorry Dave, will have to catch you next time !!) Caught a great show by Terrorfakt and had a fun night catching up with Seth, Matt & some usual supects as well as spinning some tunes :) All good.

I managed a relaxed post-slime with some Sunday Camden shopping which I've not done for a long time. Then finally I was able to get back to Hatfield for some relaxation, home cooking and a quick bit of Mac tech support to setup mums new iMac before braving the trials of Stansted on Monday evening.

Whew...

Today the first of the two ripening oranges dropped :)

<td> </td>

What a great weekend!

Despite sharing a car for 6 hours each way with four 30 something guys who revert to 16yr-olds when combined, Lizette and I managed to have a very relaxing & enjoyable weekend with pre-party stopover in Gothenburg for Magnus' 40th birthday.

Camping for the first time at a festival and since I was about 12 proved to be an interesting experience! Freezing cold at night and sauna in the mornings were par for the course, not to mention pitching next to a bunch of caravaners who delighted in playing the Benny Hill theme on loop at 8am in the mornings!
Having said that, thankfully the camping area we had found at the last minute was in a comparibly clean and quiet location still near the festival ground. The horrors of the main camping area made me very glad that we had got a lucky break but we both agreed that a hotel next year is essential ;)

Artist highlights of the weekend were Nitzer Ebb & The Young Gods. (in no particular order) Covenant did a great show though still lacking confidence in the new material. Client were their usual selves but musically on form. Combichrist were predictable & tired, the US tour has taken it's toll.
Mesh also did a good show but I'm still not overly impressed these days. Unfortunately we missed The Knife, which we later heard was an awesome show.
Cryo made a passable presentation but still needs work, Funker Vogt proved to be predictably boring as unfortunately did Ladytron.

It was really nice to meet some of Lizettes friends from Tidaholm & other northern towns. Jannet & Dorit made the usual appearance and Magnus managed to start a fight with Douglas McCarthy. All in all a top weekend :) - just a shame I didn't have a decent camera to document it all...

A hard summer in Berlin.... [10 Jul 2006|12:01pm]
[ mood | creative ]
[ music | Pzycho Bitch - 'Cold Comfort (RLZ mix)' - Strom Aus Fantasie ]

...well, if it's one thing I learned from this weekend it's to plan better in advance.
If it's a second thing, don't go to any major European capital when it's the World Cup Weekend!!
A third could possibly be to never get the night train from Sweden to Berlin when it's the middle of summer!!!

After having scoped the various travel options & prices I decied that it would be cheapest, least expensive and least stressful to get the night-train direct from Malmö to Berlin. I regretted this as soon as I stepped onto the train to find that there was no aircon and the average temp in the carriage was 34degrees :(
The 30min trip to Trelleborg for the ferry crossing did nothing to relieve the sauna like temperatures with only little ventilation through half open windows. After a brief chat with Lizette on the deck of the ferry before I lost signal I retired to the train to try to sleep. 3hours later I awoke again in an airless cabin feeling extremely claustrophobic so I made my way back to the deck for the final hour of the crossing to Rostock. On arrival we had to board the train again for disembarkation, reluctant to return to the cabin again I stood for a while chatting with an american girl who was on a european tour with a friend.
Finally, after sitting in a siding waitting for the goods waggons to be unloaded we were rolling again and the cooler night air made a definate improvement in the cabin temp so that I was able to sleep again for the last 3hours to Berlin.

I arrived at 6am with no real plan of where to stay having hoped that Chris might be available. Eventually I hooked up with 3 american guys in search of a hostel only to find that the one we wanted had limited rooms and no chance to check in before 3pm. By 8.30am I was bored of waiting for something to happen and two of the yanks had checked into the cheap hostel. I ventured a quick surf for some better hotel options and managed to find one that wasn't stupidly overpriced or miles out of town.
Despite the hotel checking being 2pm myself and the other american headed over there with plan to wait in what would almost certainly be a more comfortable reception. Arriving at about 9.15 I was delighted to bbe able to check-in immediately and we soon found ourselves in a palatial twin room for some much needed sleep.

I'd planned to meet Janet that afternoon for a catchup and surprisingly spent the whole day sleeping and then meeting the other two yanks who'd bailed out of the hostel after hearing that I had a suite ;) before heading off to meet her. We had a very pleasant chat over some Thai food before she dropped me off at Insel around 8pm.
The club remained quiet until just before midnight but still failed to reach the capacity it had when Andreas, Magnus and I were there previously, mainly dues to the heat and the fact that there was another club night running elsewhere in Berlin.
Still, it was a really fun night with myself and Marvin playing together on one floor all night until 6am, loads of time to fit in all the tunes I wanted to spin :)

I traipsed back to the hotel, arriving about 8.30am just in time for breakfast :) only to find that we couldn't extend the room booking as we'd planned (the yanks wanted the room an extra day), so after only 2 hours sleep I had to move on again. We headed into town and checked out a few hotels and searched online, but with the world cup in full swing there were no rooms left anywhere in the city center!
Eventually, after wandering around for a couple of hours & trying to find a place for the guys to drop off their rucksacks I managed to get hold of Eskil & was able to head over to his place for some welcome crash-space.
Thanks to Eskils hospitality I slept all afternoon before leaving for the station around 10pm to get the night train back. This time the weather was a little more temperate and the extra time travelling before boarding the ferry allowed the carriage to cool down considerably. I managed to sleep pretty much all the way back to Malmö :) arriving 8am with enough time to get home & shower before heading into the office.

An eventful and fun weekend, in a special kinda way ;)

I'll be coming back to the UK this weekend for an extended trip. Arrive Wed night and leave Monday evening. In between there will be large amounts of shopping, tourism & of course a liberal dose of clubbing.
I may even venture to STJ for some old-skool action but I'm not going to stress myself by trying to fit too much in on one evening!! Slimes will of course be on the agenda so I hope to see some of you there at least :)
The weekend will be topped off by some festival enjoyment in the form of Mode at the O2 Wireless in Hyde Park on Sunday.

Various summer activities including picnics & bbq's are always an option so if there is anything going on then sms me or post here.

...although the job is a little on the dull side at the moment with no client projects and no motivation for internal work. Still, it's far from stressful so plenty of time to kick back and catchup with some personal email and surfing ;)
That said, I've just spent the longest time in years catching up with friends lj's. Highly productive :) now I can go home safe in the knowledge of an afternoon well spent.

Over the last few days I've been chatting a lot online with my little bro in Tokyo. He's just skipped to a new job & it seems he's well on the way to becoming a fully fledged corporate whore with a big fat salary. Maybe my plans to visit him will be realised sooner than expected when I persaude him to pay for my flight ;)

Although, maybe it'll have to wait a while yet, there are other things on the agenda...

Not that I've had much time to relax and get some P&Q but hey, that's going to have to wait!

Martin was over for a visit this weekend and it was good to be able to chill out and have a catchup away from the usual clubbing environment.
Despite the crap weather (summer? what summer!?) we took a trip over to Copenhagen on Saturday for some touristy stuff and relaxing with a beer or two. Sunday, with a wander around Malmö, proved to be as equally chilled (and chilly!) so we decided against the possibility of trying the traditional sauna/sea experience. Another time....maybe ;)

Now I'm just gearing up for WGT next week :) - after that... maybe a trip to Bordeaux... the O2 festival, London... maybe Roskilde festival for Front242... the Arvika festival, Sweden... InFest of course....

hmmmm... about that rest & relaxation ??... :S

[ music | Cryo - 'One' - Cryogenic [2006] ]

The weekend in London proved to be another top party weekend. It's just a shame that I have no working camera at the moment to record events, a fact that needs to be rectified sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately the Covenant gig was less thrilling than anticipated, largely due to the poor choice of some of the tracks and the overall structure of the set rather than any lacklustre performance by the band. The venue lighting could have been better as well and some back projection by the band would also have added something. Words need to be had.

A day back in Malmö after the interminably tedious airport experience that follows such a fun weekend was a brief respite before taking a road trip down to Berlin with a couple of friends. The featured, in the main, large amounts of tourism, particulary of a military variety since both guys are military history geeks ;)
I have to say that the modern memorial to the holocaust was of particular note. As well as avoiding the usual extreme photography and video footage in favour of a more personal individual reflection on events, the overall architectural experience of the site left one feeling more contemplative than horrified.

Of course, the inevitable clubbing was to be had and large amounts of alcohol were 'accidentally' consumed. Damn those Absinth shots!
Unfortunately the highligh of the weekend at club Insel was curtailed due to the inevitable early morning travel plans back to Sweden. Still, with an open invitation to go back and DJ I'm sure many more hours of fun are there to be had! ;)

"911:Loose Change" [17 May 2006|04:13pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]

"This is the best damn 9-11 documentary out there."
-Dave vonKleist, Producer of "911:In Plane Site"

Loose Change is an extremely hard hitting, heavily referenced documentary. It has the best footage that has been seen to date, of all the bombs and explosions going off at the World Trade Center. It covers each individual aspect of 9/11 in keen detail, and after watching 'Loose Change' it is almost impossible to walk away and not believe that 9/11 was engineered, not by Osama, but by the US Government....

[ music | Edge Of Dawn - 'Losing Ground' (Nils Schulte mix) [2005] ]

This weekend saw the untimely demise of one of my last two remaining Koi :(
The other one nearly joined his fellow tank-mate as well. I was certain he wouldn't last the night after a 100% water change with 3% salt solution had failed to save his partner.
Still, nature has it's own ways of fighting back, and by the morning he was looking positively perky in comparison.

So, the last remaining one is one of the original three I started out with. He's possibly the most hardcore fish I have encountered, having survived various overfeeding accidents as well as being boxed and moved to Sweden!

Long may he splash his little fins.
